Hovione is a fine chemicals company that develops and manufactures Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (API) and Drug Product Intermediates.

Hovione’s site in Cork produces a variety of waste streams. These include chemical waste in the form of bulk solvents, packaged waste and laboratory chemicals. Non-hazardous waste includes cardboard, paper, plastic, food and metal wastes. The site also has a waste water treatment plant (WWTP) which produces waste sludge.

The challenge

Hovione wished to increase the quantities of waste being sent for recovery. The key goals were for Veolia to make it more cost-effective and environmentally friendly.

The solution

Veolia is a partner that reduces costs by finding value in transforming or eliminating waste to help businesses become more sustainable. A comprehensive waste audit identified the best option for different waste streams.

  • Separate solvent tanks control quality and avoid cross-contamination. Best value solvents are recovered for use in mixed thinners or to make a Secondary Liquid Fuel (SLF) for a local cement kiln to burn instead of fossil fuels to reduce CO2 emissions.
  • Samples of bulk tank waste are analysed to plan treatment, disposal or recovery before they leave the site, minimising costs and waste charges.
  • Contaminated metal drums are sent to Fermoy for processing and the metal is sent for recovery.
  • Non-hazardous waste is sorted on site into plastic, cardboard, metals and food waste. General waste is pre-treated and used to make a Refuse Derived Fuel (RDF).

The results

On-site specialist support providing sustainable solutions to maximise the value of waste and improve company performance in a highly regulated environment, in line with the site’s changing / evolving needs as they meet their customer’s demands. Created a circular economy for solvents and recyclables.

“Working together in partnership and sharing information has been key to finding improved sustainable solutions for Hovione’s waste.”
