Making a positive impact on biodiversity

Our Kilkenny office creates a brand new bug hotel from reused materials

Our office at Kilkenny has a brand new bug hotel, now open for business and ready to boost biodiversity!

As part of Veolia’s plans to improve the biodiversity of our sites and offices we looked at what could be done in our office in Kilkenny. We spoke to the staff of a local hardware store who showed us some examples of what they and others in the Kilkenny area are doing for biodiversity. To help us get started on building our own five-star bug hotel they donated materials including bricks and pallets that could be recycled and repurposed.

Our own Service and Maintenance team got to work and created the bug hotel along with an insect house using the materials from the hardware store along with other materials they sources themselves. The bug hotel and insect house are now providing a great refuge for all sorts of insects to nest and hibernate in the grounds of our Kilkenny office

In the next planting season, the team in Kilkenny will be sowing a wildflower mix to help attract bugs and butterflies – making the site a must-visit destination and ensuring there will be plenty of visitors to the hotel.

Our Kilkenny bug hotel project is just one part of the bigger picture – our biodiversity programme – and is a great example of how to enhance local biodiversity while aligning with the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle!
