in Ireland and Northern Ireland
As we navigate an era of unprecedented economic, social, and environmental challenges, Veolia is proud to present the 2024 Ireland and Northern Ireland Sustainability Report, which serves as a testament to our commitment to Ecological Transformation and our role as a catalyst for positive change. GreenUp, Veolia's strategic programme for 2024-2027, aims to accelerate the deployment of affordable, replicable solutions that depollute, decarbonise and regenerate resources.
Our strategy is guided by our Purpose, in which Veolia expresses an ambition to meet the expectations of its stakeholders in creating and sharing value. To do so, the Group is committed to delivering multifaceted performance that places the same level of attention and the same exacting demands on its economic, financial, commercial, human resources, social, and environmental performance.
Veolia's strategy is rooted in ESG. Recognised globally for environmental, social, and governance performance, we rank in top sustainability indices. We strive to be the benchmark for ecological transformation. Through our GreenUp strategy, we partner with stakeholders to pave the way for a more sustainable and desirable future by accelerating the deployment of solutions that already exist and innovating to create those of tomorrow.
Improving the water supply in Athlone
Working with Uisce Éireann and Westmeath County Council, Veolia completed the upgrade of the water treatment plant in Athlone.
The existing water treatment plant has been upgraded in two phases with the objective of increasing capacity in order to meet the long term demands for Athlone into the future.
These works enable the plant to securely supply drinking water to businesses and residents in Athlone. These works also allow Uisce Éireann to cater for growth in demand by providing significantly increased treatment capacity for future demand.
Training with a difference
Knowing the correct procedure for handling hazardous waste is critical and Veolia’s teams are constantly refreshing their knowledge and skill.
In a unique approach to training we also invited our customers to take part in a training day at our Waste Management Facility in Fermoy, Co. Cork.
They got to see first-hand how we safely and transparently manage their waste streams to maximise recycling, reuse and recovery while fully compliant with all regulations.
Energy Performance Contracts continue to deliver savings
Veolia’s Energy Performance Contracts (EPCs) continue to deliver guaranteed savings for the healthcare sector in Ireland.
Our contracts with the Mater Hospital and St. James’s Hospital both delivered additional savings above the savings guaranteed as part of the EPC.
Additional projects and upgrades planned for 2025 and 2026 will deliver even further savings for the hospitals while constantly improving patient, visitor and staff comfort.
Environment Key Impacts
87,573 tonnes of CO2 emissions avoided thanks to our solutions.
9.1 million litres of drinking water treated every hour of every day.
48,700 tonnes of waste reused or recovered by our hazardous waste experts.
Safety Week 2024: Be present
Now in its 10th year, Veolia's global Safety Week initiative focuses on developing a caring, Active Risk health and safety culture across the business. The 2024 theme, "Being present," emphasised the importance of situational awareness in applying safety procedures to real-world surroundings. Throughout the week, the Risk and Assurance team engaged employees with site activities, training, and webinars to share best practices and reinforce safety beyond mere compliance.
