Veolia wins the Irish Construction Excellence (ICE) Award for Engineering Design Innovation

The Veolia Design and Build team’s innovative work in creating an energy self-sufficient sludge treatment facility in Osberstown, Co. Kidare was recognised once again, this time at the ICE Award 2023.

The Irish Construction Excellence (ICE) Awards is Ireland's premiere honour for performance excellence in the construction industry. The awards are a great opportunity to highlight and acknowledge best practice with entries coming from a diverse range of businesses, including major construction companies, specialised contractors, engineering consultancies, and project management consultants.

We are proud and delighted that our work in Osberstown has been recognised by the ICE Awards in the Engineering Design Innovation – Element Value Over €10m Category.

A unique and innovative approach

Our approach combines innovative technologies to deliver Advanced Anaerobic Digestion (AAD) to create an energy self-sufficient Sludge Treatment Facility using biogas which powers the entire process, a vital attribute as energy costs rise and energy security concerns grow.

Working with Irish Water and Kildare County Council to co-develop a truly innovative solution, Osberstown paves the way for future smaller-scale in-land AAD-based energy recovery biosolids facilities.

The benefits for Irish Water and local communities are considerable – including a reduction in carbon emissions of around 8,500 tonnes of CO2 per year, and a reduction in natural gas usage equal to 2,700 homes.
